Reggae is a music genre that was developed in
the early 1960's by the Jamaican people. It is a combination of ska
and rock-steady music. Reggae is a specific type of music that is
usually denoted as being a broad term for a large array of music
that came from Jamaica. Reggae is actually based on the rhythmic
tones of the music, also known as skank. It is a slower, melodious
tone of music that is suitable for most all generations. It is
slower than a ska genre but quicker than a rock-steady genre which
is generally more whiny than most reggae music. This type of music
is usually made up of guitar and steel drums. It is very harmonious
and many people like this genre because of it's dulcet tones.
The term reggae is said to come from two main sources. The first is
taken from the Jamaican word rege-rege meaning ragged clothing. The
second comes from the meaning to quarrel or have a row. The
combination of the two of these terms makes up reggae. Most of the
genre's music is sang by people that come from rags, they are the
poor people of the island trying to make a difference for
themselves and the others of the island. Many people consider
reggae artists to be quarrelsome because of the fact that most all
of their music is political. There is a statement to their music
that suggests a need for change. it is also thought by some that
the name comes from the Latin Regi which means to the king,
claiming that it is King's music. This seems accurate as much of
the music that can be found in the genre is reggae gospel music,
which is try to the meaning of music for the king.
